I have a book share going on with a girl I met in cyberland and she sent me a book called Highly Sensitive People. Have any of you ever read this? It says this personality trait is genetic, but I don't know. Maybe part of it, but I think it may also have to do with very early experiences, too.

I took the lame arse quiz and found I checked off about every one of them  What do you think about this supposed personality trait and how it affect adoptees? I know that some adoptees are (seemingly) affected more than others and perhaps his triat has something to do with it or perhaps they are just better at denying the issues. I don't know.

I though I saw a book forum but now I can't find it.

Does that describe any of you?

Sarah, although there can be a predisposition for certain traits, a predisposition is not necessarily a life sentence.  Research has shown that our mother's emotions in utero can contribute and, more than that, how we interact with our postnatal caregivers - our experience-dependent interaction - has more to do with certain traits than anything else.  So you are right to think that early experiences affect us - SO much more than most people realize.

BTW, I am sure that I am a lame-arsed person.  I attribute it not to genetics but to the lame-arsed "care" I got after I was separated from my mother.

I took it and checked off about 8 but find the test interesting....

Have you guys heard of 'hypervigilance'? That more aptly describes me than highly sensitive. I am MORE sensitive than others but not crazily so....but hypervigilant SO much so that I practically read peoples auras.
