I'm a 33 year old adult adoptee born and adopted in Schenectady, NY but currently living in PA.  I have lived a somewhat "sheltered" life and honestly didn't realize there was so much hullabaloo surrounding adoption and especially adoptees.  It actually took my husband coming home one day telling me that he didn't think it was right for adult adoptees to not have access to their OWN records for me to realize that was even an issue!  I know...I know...naive, aren't I?

I am not in any type of reunion, nor have I even remotely considered it.  Lately, however, I have become more curious about my birth family and wonder if I would ever be able to bring myself to search.  I doubt it, but one never knows!  Funny thing is that while I consider life in my adopted family wonderful and normal I never really saw the negative things until recently.  It never really bothered me, until now, that my a-mom used to hold over my head that I could have always been living on the streets or God knows where were it not for her and my dad.  It also never bothered me that the way I found out I was adopted was by overhearing my a-mom telling the postman!!!  I KNOW!!!  It's like a bad soap-opera!  I often wonder, if I never overheard them talking, would my a-parents have ever told me I was adopted?  I also wonder if the stories I was told, about a 16 year old girl, who, out of love and compassion for me and after trying to care for me for 2 years, finally decided I deserved a better life than she could provide, are true!  Is that how it really happened?  Again, one never knows.  Perhaps, someday, should I build the nerve to search, I might learn that answer.  Until then I guess all I can do is wonder and go on living my perfect little, satisfied, adult-adoptee life.

So, now that you know more about me than you ever wanted to know, thanks for starting this message board.  And thanks Addie.  It was through your blog that I learned of this message board and decided to join!  I look forward to what the future holds for all of us and for this message board!

Helloooo everyone!     I didn't realize there were so many of us with new york connections....

Shoolady, pm me if you want to make any forward steps with searching, even if it is just to get your non-id info from your agency. I can atleast give you some support, having done it very recently myself. I'm in NY. Took me about 2.5 years from receiving non-id to locate my firstfamily. And it took me FOREVER before that to make the leap into searching.

Another NY connection here. Born and raised in the greater Buffalo area until I was 16. Now I live in IL, but I still miss NY.
