Invariably when refers to adult adoptees as "adopted children" they mean to put us in our place. We are supposed to stay "barefoot and grateful". I've written some pretty pithy letters to the editor in my time about this, but today I found out about an editorial by the Daily Campus, the student newspaper at the University of Connecticut, that solemnly intones that the rights of "adopted children" to access their birth certificates need to be weighed against the mythological "birthmother's" right to privacy, blah de blah blah. This really irked me. The kids who wrote this drivvel are the same age as my oldest kid, and THEY HAVE THE NERVE TO CALL ME A CHILD?

So I have decided to start the Bad Binkie Award, for the uninformed who editorially call us "adopted children". I'm going to announce awards on my blog, BB Church's Funhouse http://bbchurch.blogspot.com and I'm going to send them a pacifier in the mail with a note: "I am no longer an adopted child, so I don't need this pacifier. I've sent it to you as a reminder that I am an adult adoptee and I expect the same rights as all adults." I think they would make excellent reminders to legislators too, along with a note that we are adopted adults and WE VOTE...
